The Mobility Device Training Catalogue is a bilingual document that provides links to mobility device training tools (written instructions and videos), which can be used by individuals with mobility impairments, caregivers, or health care professionals. Created by CDPP researchers from the Université Laval / Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche en réadaptation et en intégration sociale (CIRRIS)and University of British Columbia, the Mobility Device Training Catalogue summarizes high-quality training resources that are feely available on the internet to provide Canadians across the country with quality information about how to use mobility devices.

Quality of Participation Measure and Guide

CDPP researchers have developed a measure to evaluate the quality of participation for people with disabilities across employment, mobility, and sport and exercise life domains.

The Measure of Experiential Aspects of Participation (MeEAP) was designed to be conceptually aligned with the six experiential aspects of participation among people with physical disabilities (i.e., autonomy, belongingness, challenge, engagement, mastery, and meaning).

Accessibility Design

The aim of this project was to describe the methodology used to propose design guidelines for accessible pedestrian infrastructures that are applicable in the province of Quebec's context. Three groups of experts were consulted separately: 1) individuals with motor, visual, and hearing disabilities (n=15), 2) health clinicians and researchers (n=11), 3) municipal employees, representatives from public transportation agencies and from the ministry of transportation. These experts identified accessible and applicable design features from the scientific and grey literature through nominal group consensus.

Mobility Resource Catalogue(s)

A scoping review of educational online resources for mobility assistive technology users and their caregivers. The aims of this project are to: 1) Identify existing web-based educational resources intended to train people with disabilities and their caregivers on how to use their mobility devices (wheelchairs, walking aids); 2) Assess the quality of exiting educational resources; and 3) Develop a resources catalogue and a prototype of an online knowledge transfer tool to inform potential users of the availability of these educational resources. Completion of the scoping review is anticipated for September 2017, and then data synthesis and manuscript preparation will commence.

Peer-led Wheelchair Training in the Community

The overall aim of this CDPP project is to continue evaluations of a peer-led manual wheelchair training program for community-living adults for improving wheelchair skills and participation. A peer-led wheelchair training program shows promise as a feasible intervention positively influences wheelchair use outcomes. Future studies will examine group-based training initiatives and will seek to further evaluate participation outcomes. Data collection on new projects will begin in Quebec City and Vancouver in Fall 2017. This project is a link between CDPP Mobility and Sport & Exercise Teams.

A poster was presented at the 2nd Quebec Congress in Rehabilitation-Adaptation Research (REPAR) in Montreal 2017 and presents the results of a feasibility RCT on peer-led wheelchair training for olde adults:

What Constitutes 'Quality' Participation?

CDPP’s focus is on improving not just the number of people with disabilities participating, but also the quality of participation. It is important that we have a clear conceptualization of what is meant by a ‘quality’ participation experience. CDPP team members recently published a literature review, culminating in the recommendation that “the individual’s subjective perceptions of autonomy, belongingness, challenge, engagement, mastery and meaning associated with participating be incorporated into conceptualizations and operationalizations of the participation construct.” These six criteria will be important outcomes to be assessed in future CDPP projects.

Smart-phone Delivered Peer-led Physical Activity Counselling

Despite the importance of physical activity, the evidence for effective intervention strategies for manual wheelchair (MWC) users is underdeveloped. Community-based programs and telephone-counselling interventions to increase physical activity among MWC users have had some success, but the uptake and adherence to these interventions remains low within this population. Although the physical activity needs of MWC users are not fully understood, there is reason to believe that including peers into intervention delivery may have benefits. This study will evaluate the feasibility of a Smartphone-delivered Peer-led Physical Activity Counselling (SPPAC) program for MWC users.

The poster below, presented at the 2e Congrès québécois de recherche en adaptation-réadaptation in Montreal 2017, outlines a study that is part of the SPPAC development and evaluation project. The purpose of this project is to validate the use of Actigraphy to objectively measure physical activity in manual wheelchair users. Data analyses for this study is near completion, with a manuscript anticipated for submission by July 31, 2017. This project is a link between the CDPPP Mobility and Sport & Exercise Teams.

Case-Book of Community-Based Best-Practices

A MITACS-funded postdoctoral fellow has been working at the Sam Sullivan Disability Foundation (SSDF) on a series of program evaluation projects. Comprehensive interviews and focus groups have been undertaken with participants, volunteers and staff for each of the SSDF projects. A survey is being prepared to assess a larger proportion of participants. A report will be prepared and results will be formulated into a case-book that can be used by other organizations to learn about challenges, opportunities, and best-practices in community programming for people with disabilities.
